Effectiveness of Saffron in Treating Sexual Dysfunction
Researchers in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences have proved the effectiveness of saffron in improving sexual stamina and dysfunction. This study, conducted by two experienced professors of this university, is provided here.
This article was presented in the Applied Science Conference on Saffron in Mashhad as a collection of findings of Dr. Ali Shamsa, professor of urology, and Dr. Hussein Husseinzade, professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.
In this conference, Dr. Shamsa said: Our studies proved that saffron has significant therapeutic impacts on impotence in men.
He added that impotence is a common disease in men with a prevalence of 150 million worldwide. He also said that the therapeutic effect of saffron on impotence in men was approved in a study on 20 patients in Ghaem Hospital in Mashhad.
Mentioning the age range of these patients (26-62 years), he included that in this study, patients' conditions were precisely examined before treatment. After precise examinations, questioning the patients, and performing Rigiscan, they were received a 200 mg saffron pill per day for ten days. In the last day of the study, two saffron extract tablets (400 mg in total) were given to the patients. They then underwent Rigiscan, showing significant improvement in their sexual stamina.
Emphasizing on the cost-effectiveness and higher safety of this drug as compared to other medications for impotence (like Viagra), Dr. Shamsa maintained that the application of Viagra in treating sexual dysfunction in patients with heart diseases can lead to sudden death, blindness, and other consequences; whereas, these complications were not observed in several studies into saffron.
Referring to the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in Iran, and other countries, he also stated that this problem is not specific to men, rather is common among females too.
He said, although the effects of saffron on women with sexual dysfunction have not been investigated, similar effects of Viagra on men and women put forward probable effectiveness of saffron in women as similar to men.
Dr. Shamsa declared that the objective of this study is to produce a medication that can be used instead of the current hazardous and expensive drugs in treating impotence.
